How to stack wood
- Move the piece with the pointer, or ← →. Turn it with the mouse wheel, right click, or Q and E (↑ too). Set it down with a click, Space or ↓. On a phone, drag to move and use the buttons.
- A piece is lowered, not thrown: the faint shape on the pile is where it will come to rest, as long as nothing underneath moves.
- Tight is how much of your pile is wood rather than air. Wedges point up and point down, side by side, is the whole art. Anything dropped any old way packs to about three quarters.
- Level is how flat the top is, and how close to the line between the posts. Bark up is how much of the top is bark, which is what keeps the rain out. Everyone who has ever stacked wood will tell you this, at length.
- The pile gets a fixed amount of wood: packed well, it fills the rack to the line. Packed badly, it goes over, where there is nothing to hold it. When the wood is gone, or you say Enter, the winter storm comes. What it blows out of the rack is lost.
- Today’s pile is the same wood, in the same order, for everyone today, and the first pile is the one that counts. Every pile has a number, and its link goes back to that exact wood.
- F or the corner button takes the woodshed full screen, and F or Esc brings it back.
